How do I choose a base?

The base holds the water. The downstem from the pipe sits under the waterline, so the smoke is pulled through the water and cooled before it travels up to you. It is also the part most people notice first, so the look matters too.

Water level is what counts. Fill so the downstem sits about two to three centimetres under the surface. Too much water makes the draw hard, too little means less cooling. Most bases have a guide line, or you match it to your stem.

Size and shape. A taller, wider base holds more water and air for a smoother, cooler session. A smaller base is easier to store and travel with. The neck has to match your pipe, so check the fitting (most modern pipes use a standard ground-glass or threaded join).

Usually glass. Handle with care, rinse with warm water and a base brush after sessions, and never pour boiling water straight into cold glass.

How to choose a shisha base

Fit comes down to two things: the neck opening and the seal. Most modern pipes use a push-in grommet fit, so match the vase neck to the diameter of your stem's downstem and choose a base tall enough to sit stable. As a rough sizing guide:

Small / travel: around 15 to 20 cm tall, neck near 45 to 50 mm, made for portable and single-hose setups.
Standard: around 24 to 30 cm tall, neck near 50 to 55 mm, the everyday fit for most mid-size pipes.
Large / statement: 32 cm and up, wider body and a heavier base for tall stems and party sessions.

Expert tip: fill the water so it sits about 2 to 3 cm above the bottom of the downstem. Too much water makes the draw heavy, too little lets smoke pass unfiltered, so a shorter base needs less water than a tall one to pull the same.

What size base do I need? Match the base to your stem. Most mid-size pipes take a standard base around 24 to 30 cm tall; travel and single-hose pipes suit a small base, and tall stems need a large one for stability.

What's the difference between a base and a vase?

Nothing - same thing, different name. "Base" is the common English/Australian term; "vase" is the older and more European term. Both refer to the glass water chamber at the bottom of the hookah. You'll also hear "bowl" used in German contexts, which confusingly refers to the base there, not the tobacco bowl.

How much water do I put in the base?

Enough to submerge the downstem by about an inch. That's the sweet spot - the stem needs to sit below the waterline for the pipe to work, and an inch is enough to filter properly without over-restricting the draw. More water means more restriction and more flavour; less water means a smoother, opener pull.

Will this base fit my hookah?

Depends on the opening diameter and the grommet. Khalil Mamoon and classic Egyptian hookahs use 2-inch openings; modern Russian pipes like Alpha use tighter 1.77-inch openings. Match the grommet to your stem, and most bases in this range will fit. If you're unsure of your stem size, measure the rubber grommet already on your pipe.

Why would I buy a separate base?

Three common reasons. Breakage - glass bases are the most fragile part of any hookah, and eventually one meets the floor. Modern Russian pipes like Alpha and MattPear don't include a base at all, so you choose one to complete the setup. And some people swap bases purely for style - a ruby Russian vase or a crystal piece changes the whole pipe's look. KM bases listed here are replacements or style swaps; KM pipes come with a base in the set.

Standard glass vs crystal - is there a real difference?

Yes, but it's mostly cosmetic and tactile. Standard soda-lime glass is durable, clear, and cheaper. Crystal glass (lead-free) is heavier, refracts light more dramatically, and feels more premium in hand. Bohemian/Russian hand-cut crystal bases use traditional European glass techniques and are genuinely handmade. The session itself - flavour, clouds, draw - is identical.

Do I need a base mat?

Yes. A base mat is a small silicone disc (around 15–20cm) that sits between the glass base and whatever surface you set the pipe on. Its main job is shock absorption - cushioning the glass from knocks and preventing hairline cracks. It also adds grip so the pipe doesn't slide. Cheap insurance against a broken base.
