What are Shisha Hoses?

The shisha hose is the tube that carries cooled smoke from the pipe to you. It's the last piece of the airflow path, and it quietly shapes the session — how smoothly you draw, how pure the flavour tastes, how easily the pipe cleans between different shishas.

Three things actually matter when picking one. First, material — silicone is washable and doesn't ghost old flavours, fabric and leather-wrapped hoses can't be rinsed and eventually every session tastes like the last one. Second, inner diameter — wider bore draws opener and smoother, narrower bore pulls tighter with more concentrated flavour (same restriction-vs-flavour tradeoff that runs through the rest of shisha). Third, length — 150 to 180cm sits comfortably across a coffee table; shorter is fine but anything under 120cm starts to feel cramped.

Kinking is the most common frustration with silicone. An anti-kink spring over the handle end solves it in seconds — worth picking up alongside any new silicone hose.

Questions about Shisha Hoses

What does "washable hose" actually mean?
It means the inside of the hose is made of non-porous material — silicone or food-grade plastic — so water can rinse through it without damage. A warm-water rinse after each session flushes out residue and stops flavours ghosting. Traditional leather-wrapped hoses have an absorbent inner lining and can't be washed; once you've used them a dozen times, the taste stays.
How long should a shisha hose be?
Most sit between 150 and 180cm. That's long enough to pass comfortably around a group and short enough that the draw still feels direct. Shorter hoses (120cm) are fine for solo sessions or compact pipes. Under 120cm the hose starts to feel cramped; over 200cm the draw weakens noticeably because the smoke has further to travel.
Will this hose fit my pipe?
Almost always yes. Standard hose ports use grommet-style fittings that accept most hose tails across brands. A few modern pipes — Steamulation, MattPear, Aeon — use proprietary adapters, so check the listing if you own one of those. Otherwise, shisha hoses are one of the most universally compatible parts of the setup.
Why do silicone hoses kink, and how do I stop it?
Silicone is flexible by design, which is also why it folds at pressure points — usually where it meets the handle or stem adapter. A stainless steel anti-kink spring slides over the hose at that junction and holds it round under pressure. Cheap, takes five seconds, eliminates the problem completely.
Disposable hoses — worth keeping around?
Yes, for sharing with guests you don't know well or for high-flavour-turnover sessions where washing between bowls is inconvenient. Each disposable is individually wrapped and gets thrown after use. Not a replacement for a proper reusable hose — the material is thin and the draw isn't as clean — but useful to have a pack on hand.
How often should I replace a silicone hose?
When the tubing starts to discolour, when the flavour feels off even after a rinse, or when it's visibly cracking. A well-looked-after silicone hose runs a couple of years of regular sessions. Leather and fabric hoses are different — replace those based on how stale the taste has become, not how the outside looks.
