Charcoal Burners

What is a Shisha Charcoal Burner?

A shisha charcoal burner is the device you use to light your coals before placing them on the bowl. Most models are a simple electric coil — plug it in, the coil glows red, and your coals sit on top and light from the bottom up.

Electric burners come in 650W, 1000W and 1500W versions. More watts means faster ignition: a 1000W burner takes around 8–12 minutes to fully light a set of cube coals; a 650W is slower but draws less power. Gas burners sit on a portable butane canister and do the same job without an outlet — the go-to for outdoor sessions, patios and travel.

The rule is the same as lighting a BBQ: don't rush. Wait until every coal is fully glowing red with a thin coating of white ash on the surface. Half-lit coals ruin a session — they smoke harshly and burn your tobacco unevenly. Five to eight minutes of patience saves twenty minutes of a bad bowl.

Also known as: coal heater, coal lighter, charcoal starter, hookah stove, shisha coil burner.

Questions about Charcoal Burners

Do I need a burner, or can I just use a lighter?
You need a burner — natural coconut coals don't light from a flame. A lighter will char the outside without igniting the coal through, leaving you with a blowtorch for ten minutes. Quick-light coals do catch from a flame, but they contain chemical accelerants that affect flavour. For natural coals, a burner is the right tool.
How long does it take to light coals?
On a 1000W electric burner, around 8–12 minutes for cube coals. A 1500W unit gets there in 7–9. A 650W takes a bit longer. You know they're ready when every face of the coal glows red and a thin coating of white ash appears on the surface — not before.
Will it work with any charcoal type?
Yes — natural coconut coals (cubes, hexas, flats, sticks) all light on any burner. Quick-light coals are better lit with a lighter since they're designed for that. The burner's job is ignition, not burn quality — your coal brand still determines how clean and long the burn is.
Does wattage really matter?
It matters for speed. 1000W is the sweet spot for most home setups — fast enough for a quick turnaround between bowls, not so power-hungry it trips anything. 650W is slower but runs fine on any outlet. 1500W is fastest but overkill for solo sessions.
Electric or gas — which should I get?
Electric for home — faster, cleaner, no fuel refills. Gas for outdoor use, picnics or camping, where a power outlet isn't available. Gas burners also need more coal rotation to light evenly, since the flame concentrates heat on the bottom face.
Can I just use my kitchen stove?
Technically yes, and plenty of people do. A gas hob lights coals in about the same time as a 1000W electric burner. The downside is soot, ash and the occasional coal chip landing on your stovetop. A dedicated burner keeps the mess in one place — a quality-of-life upgrade more than a performance one.
