Cube Coals

What are Cube Coals?

Cube coals are the most common format of hookah charcoal — six-sided cubes the size of a sugar cube, made from compressed coconut shell. They're the default choice for HMD setups and pair with modern hookahs more often than any other coal shape.

The cube shape matters. Each of the six sides sits flat against the HMD floor or screen, so heat transfers evenly and the coal doesn't tip. When one side burns down, rotate to a fresh side and keep going. A 25mm cube in an HMD delivers 60 to 90 minutes of usable heat.

Sizes cluster around three standards. 25mm is the Kaloud Lotus default and suits most enclosed HMDs. 26mm runs hotter and longer — TPW's house standard, with Shaman 26mm the default pick. 28mm XXL cubes pack the most heat for the longest sessions, but need a bigger HMD or screen to fit.

Flat cubes are a variant of the same format — lower profile, wider footprint — which spreads heat across a larger area. Useful if your HMD or screen has a broad internal floor.

Also known as: cube charcoal, coconut cubes, hookah cubes, shisha cubes, 25mm coals, 26mm coals.

Frequently asked

Questions about Cube Coals

What's the difference between cubes and hexa coals?
Cubes are six-sided blocks that sit flat and burn evenly — the standard for HMDs. Hexa (hexagonal) coals are stick-shaped for better heat distribution across a foil bowl. Cubes inside an enclosed HMD, hexas on foil or with a heat screen. Using hexas inside an HMD burns too hot, too fast.
How many cubes do I need per session?
Two to four cubes depending on your setup. A Kaloud Lotus I+ takes two 25mm cubes; larger HMDs and fruit heads take three or four. Foil setups typically run three or four cubes arranged around the edge of the bowl. More isn't always better — too much heat burns the shisha instead of cooking it.
Can I use cubes with foil instead of an HMD?
Yes, but with compromise. Cubes on foil work, but don't spread heat as evenly as hexa or stick coals — you'll often get hot spots directly under each cube. If you're running foil, hexas or sticks generally session better. Cubes really come into their own inside an enclosed HMD.
25mm vs 26mm vs 28mm — which should I buy?
25mm is the standard and what most HMDs are designed for. 26mm runs a bit hotter and slightly longer — a safe all-purpose choice for modern HMDs. 28mm XXL for the longest, hottest sessions, but check that your HMD or screen has room. Start with 26mm unless your HMD specifies otherwise.
What are flat cubes?
Flat cubes are a shorter, wider variant of the standard cube — same footprint on one side, roughly half the height. The lower profile spreads heat across a larger area, which suits HMDs and screens with broad internal floors. They burn the same amount of time as regular cubes and work the same way.
Does the cube brand actually matter?
More than with some shisha gear, but not everything. Consistent cube density, minimal ash, and a chemical-free coconut source are what you're really paying for. Shaman is TPW's go-to for those reasons; Cocourth and Al Duchan also deliver reliably. Cheap coals often crack, produce excess ash, or carry a faint odour.
