Foil, Heat Screens, and HMDs: What's the Difference?

Foil, heat screens, and heat management devices (HMDs) all do the same job — they sit between your shisha and your coals, letting heat through while keeping the coals from touching the shisha directly.

Foil is the traditional method. A thin aluminium sheet goes over the packed bowl, you poke 25–40 holes in it, and lit coals go on top. Cheap, simple, longer gentler sessions.

A heat screen is a metal device that sits on top of the foil. It holds the coals in a small basket above the foil, spreading heat more evenly and stopping coals burning through. A big upgrade over plain foil — we strongly recommend using one. Dschinni and AOT Provost are our picks.

An HMD (like the Kaloud Lotus) replaces foil entirely. It's a metal housing with a vented lid that sits directly on your bowl, holding the coals inside. Stronger, cloudier sessions — but shorter, because HMDs burn coals hotter.

Questions about Foil & HMD

What do I actually need — foil, heat screen, or HMD?
You have three options. Plain foil is the cheapest and simplest. Foil with a heat screen on top is our usual recommendation — the screen makes a noticeable difference for a small extra cost. An HMD replaces foil entirely — no foil, no poking. Pick one, not all three.
How do I use foil?
Tear a sheet big enough to cover the packed bowl, stretch it tight across the top, wrap the edges around the rim, then poke 25–40 holes through it in a grid or spiral. If you have a heat screen, place it on top of the foil now. Then place 3 lit hexa or stick coals on top (on the screen if you're using one). Pre-cut foil comes with the holes already done.
Does an HMD fit any shisha bowl?
Most standard-sized bowls, yes. A Kaloud Lotus fits phunnel bowls and most traditional Egyptian bowls with a standard rim width. Very wide bowls or deep Egyptian bowls with oversized mouths may need a different HMD or won't seat properly. Check the bowl diameter against the HMD base before buying if you're unsure.
How many coals do I use?
For foil or foil + heat screen, start with 3 hexa or stick coals — the longer shape spreads heat evenly across the bowl. For an HMD like a Kaloud Lotus, use 4 cube coals — they fit the basket and give a solid heat profile. Adjust up or down once you see how your setup runs.
What does a heat screen actually do?
A heat screen sits on top of your foil and holds the coals slightly above the foil instead of resting directly on it. This spreads heat more evenly across the bowl, stops coals from burning straight through, and most have a wind cover built in. Is an HMD worth it over foil + heat screen?
Depends how often you session. If you use your shisha regularly, an HMD pays for itself fast — no more foil rolls, easier setup, and the device lasts years. The performance difference comes down to preference: HMDs give stronger, cloudier sessions; foil setups give longer, gentler ones.
