Heat Management Devices (HMDs)

What are Heat Management Devices?

This collection covers two different types of device, both designed to improve how heat reaches your shisha — and they work in quite different ways.

Heat screens (like the AOT Provost or Dschinni Vulcan) sit on top of foil. You pack the bowl and cover it with foil as normal, then the screen goes on top with coals inside. It spreads heat evenly, stops burn-through, and usually has a wind cover. It's an upgrade to a foil setup — not a replacement.

True HMDs (like the Kaloud Lotus) replace foil entirely. You pack the bowl, sit the HMD directly on top, drop coals inside, close the lid. No foil, no hole-poking. The enclosed body holds heat more efficiently, producing stronger draws and bigger clouds — but coals burn hotter and faster, so sessions are shorter. Expect 45–60 minutes versus 90+ on a well-managed foil setup.

Most HMDs and screens are designed for cube coals, typically 2 to 4 depending on device size. Adjustable vents or lids let you dial heat down mid-session.

Also known as: HMDs, heat screens, Lotus, Provost, heat caps, charcoal holders.

Optimise Your Hookah Session with Heat Management Devices

A Hookah Heat Management Device (HMD) is essential for any hookah enthusiast. HMDs regulate the charcoal's heat, ensuring consistent temperature, better-tasting smoke, and preventing the charcoal from overheating. This not only enhances your smoking experience but also extends the life of your shisha coals.

How does an HMD work?

An HMD usually consists of a base plate and a cover plate. The base plate sits on the hookah bowl, while the cover plate fits securely on top. These components are connected by a heat-resistant rope or wire, which helps regulate the charcoal's temperature. Some HMDs also feature built-in vents for improved airflow, maintaining optimal heat levels.

Benefits of Using an HMD:

  1. Consistent Temperature: Maintains steady heat for smoother smoke.
  2. Prolonged Coal Life: Prevents damage to coals, making them last longer.
  3. Moist Tobacco: Keeps tobacco moist for enhanced flavour.
  4. Heat Control: Allows precise control over the heat applied to the tobacco.
  5. Reduced Toxins: Minimises the inhalation of nicotine and tar.

Top Hookah Heat Management Devices on the Market:

  1. Kaloud Lotus: Made from stainless steel with a heat-resistant ceramic coating, the Lotus ensures even burning and prevents hot spots.
  2. SMOKEZILLA Stainless Steel Hot Screen Gun Metal: This device features a unique design with holes for even heat distribution, providing a smooth smoking experience.
  3. AOT Provost: Equipped with silicone handles for ultimate heat control, the Provost can accommodate up to four large-size cube coals, offering excellent heat management.

How to Use an HMD with Your Hookah Pipe:

  1. Fill the hookah base with water until it's about one inch below the top.
  2. Place the coals on the HMD and light them.
  3. Position the HMD on the hookah bowl.
  4. Attach the mouthpiece to the hookah stem and start smoking.
  5. Adjust the coals' position on the HMD for even heat distribution.
  6. After smoking, let the coals cool on a heat-resistant surface before disposing of them.

Benefits and Unique Selling Points:

Superior Smoking Experience: Using an HMD ensures a smoother, more enjoyable smoke with consistent heat and flavour.

Enhanced Control: HMDs provide better control over the heat, allowing for a tailored smoking experience.

Increased Efficiency: By preventing coals from burning too hot or too fast, HMDs save money in the long run.

Frequently asked

Questions about Heat Management Devices (HMDs)

What's the difference between a heat screen and an HMD?
A heat screen sits on top of foil — you still pack your bowl with foil as normal, the screen goes over it, coals go in the screen. It upgrades a foil setup. A true HMD replaces foil entirely — coals sit inside the device, which sits directly on the bowl. Different setups, different use cases.
Do I still need foil with the AOT Provost or Dschinni Vulcan?
Yes. Both are heat screens, not HMDs — they work on top of foil, not instead of it. Pack your bowl, cover with foil, poke your holes as usual, then place the Provost or Vulcan on top with coals inside. They spread heat and stop burn-through; they don't replace the foil underneath.
How many coals go in an HMD or heat screen?
Two to four cube coals for most HMDs, depending on size. A Kaloud Lotus I+ takes two 25mm cubes; the Lotus I+3 takes four. Heat screens typically take three cubes or a couple of hexa coals. Let the coals glow completely before placing them. Hexas and sticks work in screens but not enclosed HMDs.
Are HMD sessions really shorter than foil?
Yes, typically. The enclosed metal body of a true HMD holds heat very efficiently, so coals burn hotter and faster. A foil setup with hexa coals and a heat screen can run 90+ minutes; an HMD session is usually 45 to 60 minutes. The tradeoff is bigger, more intense clouds for the time you get.
Which should I start with — screen or HMD?
A heat screen if you want to upgrade a foil setup without changing how you already pack and session. A true HMD if you want the simplest setup possible and don't mind shorter, more intense sessions. Many enthusiasts keep both and switch based on the mood — long and mellow versus strong and quick.
Do HMDs fit every bowl?
Most modern HMDs fit most traditional and phunnel bowls, but edge cases exist — oversized traditionals, very shallow bowls, or HMDs built for one specific brand's dimensions. Check the HMD's stated compatibility before buying. The Kaloud Lotus I+ pairs perfectly with Kaloud Samsaris bowls but works on most standard bowls.
