Phunnel Bowls

What are Phunnel Bowls?

A phunnel bowl is a shisha bowl with just one hole — right in the middle, raised up like a small spire. Traditional bowls have multiple small holes across the base; phunnel bowls have none there, just that single raised hole in the centre.

The raised spire does one important thing: it keeps the shisha juices inside the bowl instead of letting them drain down into your pipe. Your stem and base stay cleaner, and the flavour the molasses carries stays where it should — with the tobacco.

Phunnel bowls are easier to pack than traditional bowls. You fluff the shisha in around the spire without having to worry about blocking small holes. That makes them a safe pick for anyone new to shisha, and still the go-to for dark leaf and juicy flavours that would drain straight through a traditional bowl.

The tradeoff: the flavour is slightly flatter than a traditional multi-hole bowl. You get cleaner sessions and better juice retention; you give up a little flavour intensity. Session length sits about the same.

Phunnel Shisha Bowls

A phunnel bowl uses a single raised hole in the centre of the base. That one design change is why it runs the way it does.

Unlike a traditional multi-hole bowl, the raised hole sits above the base, so the liquid pools underneath instead of draining through. The heat stays even and the session holds its character from the first draw to the last. It is the bowl serious shisha and hookah setups are built around.

Our range covers glazed clay, silicone and glass phunnel bowls in small, medium and large sizes, from a quiet solo session to a full table of friends.

Which phunnel bowl is right for you

  • Clay — holds heat well and suits anyone who runs their setup hot; our pick for experienced sessions and heat-lovers.
  • Silicone — forgiving, near unbreakable and easy to clean; the easiest starting point for a first phunnel.
  • Glass — clean, neutral and built to be seen; a match for glass and modern stems.

Sizing to your pipe and crowd

  • Small — solo and two-person sessions, and compact or travel stems.
  • Medium — the everyday size for most standard hookah stems and small groups.
  • Large — longer sessions and a full table; pair with a taller full-size stem.

Every bowl fits standard hookah stems and grommets. Run one with a heat management device, or reach for foil and coals when you want full control over the burn.

Questions about phunnel bowls

What is a phunnel bowl?

A phunnel bowl is a shisha bowl with a single raised hole in the centre rather than several small holes across the base. The raised hole keeps the liquid pooled in the base instead of draining through, which helps the heat stay even across a longer session.

Phunnel vs a traditional bowl, what is the difference?

A traditional Egyptian or multi-hole bowl has several holes across a flat base, so liquid drains straight through. A phunnel has one central raised hole that holds the liquid underneath. Many shisha setups choose a phunnel for a more even, consistent burn.

What size phunnel bowl do I need?

Choose a small for solo or two-person sessions and compact stems, a medium for everyday use on most standard hookah stems, and a large for longer sessions or a full table on a full-size stem.

Frequently asked

Questions about Phunnel Bowls

How do you pack a phunnel bowl?
Fluff the shisha between your fingers to break up any clumps, then sprinkle it into the bowl around the central spire. Don't pack it down — phunnel bowls need airflow around the shisha, so keep it light and loose. Leave about 2–3mm between the top of the shisha and where your foil will sit so nothing touches. The single hole makes blocking the airflow almost impossible.
Does a phunnel bowl work with foil and an HMD?
Both. With foil, stretch a tight sheet over the rim and poke holes around the edge — avoid poking directly over the central spire. With an HMD like a Kaloud Lotus, it sits over the bowl and the spire doesn't interfere. Most phunnel packers pair them with an HMD now because the heat control is easier to get right on a phunnel shape.
What tobacco works best in a phunnel?
Juicy and wet tobaccos — dark leaf blends like Darkside or Tangiers, and anything where the molasses is heavy enough to drip through a traditional bowl's holes. Blonde leaf tobaccos (Al Fakher, Nakhla, Adalya, Mazaya) work fine in a phunnel too — but a traditional multi-hole bowl tends to pull more flavour from them.
What size phunnel should I buy?
Small (around 15g capacity) for solo sessions. Medium (around 20–25g) for 60–90 minute sessions solo or with one other person. Large (25–30g+) for longer group nights. Most enthusiasts keep a medium as their default. Size affects session length and group size, not flavour profile.
Will a phunnel bowl fit my shisha?
Yes, if it's a TPW shisha. All TPW bowls are universal-fit and work with any TPW pipe — modern or traditional. The grommet that seats the bowl to the stem handles most standard port sizes. If you've got a non-standard shisha from elsewhere, check the bowl's base diameter against your stem's top port before buying.
Why do some people still prefer traditional bowls?
Flavour intensity. Traditional multi-hole bowls pull more flavour through the pack and give longer sessions thanks to wider airflow. The tradeoff is molasses drains down into the pipe — meaning more cleaning between sessions. Some enthusiasts pick phunnel for convenience and cleaner sessions; some pick traditional for richer flavour and accept the extra cleanup. Neither is wrong.
