Do I need an anti-kink spring?

Only if your hose kinks. Silicone hoses can fold where they meet the handle or stem adapter, which blocks the draw mid-session. An anti-kink spring is a stainless steel coil that slides over the hose at that pressure point and stops the kink happening. Leather and fabric hoses don't usually kink, so you don't need one.

What does a purge valve ball bearing do?

It's the small metal or glass ball inside your pipe's purge valve. When you draw on the hose, suction pulls it down and seals the hole. When you blow gently into the hose, it lifts and lets stale smoke escape without water coming back up the stem. If your valve leaks or bubbles water when you draw, the bearing has probably corroded — replacing it is a thirty-second fix.

Do bowl screens actually help?

In a phunnel bowl, yes — though they're not mandatory. A mesh screen sits over the central spire and stops tobacco falling down the hole before it has a chance to vaporise. You get slightly more efficient use of the pack and a cleaner session. In a traditional multi-hole bowl, screens don't make sense — the hole design already works with the tobacco packed directly against it.

How do I know which hose adapter I need?

Check your stem. Most modern pipes use standard threaded connections, but a few brands — Steamulation, MattPear, Aeon — use proprietary fittings that need a brand-matched adapter. The product listing will say which stem brand or model each adapter fits. For traditional pipes, standard grommet-style adapters fit almost everything.

Are these accessories universal across hookahs?

Most are. Anti-kink springs, purge bearings, bowl screens, and grommet-style parts work across almost any setup as long as the size is right.
