What Shisha Accessories Do You Need?

Accessories are all the bits and pieces that go with your shisha pipe — everything from the coals that provide the heat to the hose you draw through.

To actually run a session, you need five things. Charcoal, to heat the shisha. Foil or a heat management device, which goes between the coals and the shisha. Tongs, for picking up hot coals safely. A hose, to draw the smoke through. And mouthtips, so people can share a hose hygienically.

Everything else is nice to have. Cleaning brushes keep the pipe fresh between sessions. Mats protect your table from heat and ash. Wind covers stop the breeze from messing with your coals outdoors. Carry bags let you take the pipe to a friend's place without taking it apart.

What accessories do you need for a shisha?

A complete session needs a grommet to seal the pipe, tongs to move hot coals, foil or a heat management device to control the heat, and a hose or mouth tip to draw from. Cleaning brushes and a poker keep everything running well between sessions.

What is a shisha grommet for?

A grommet is the silicone or rubber seal that sits between parts of the pipe, such as the bowl and the stem or the stem and the base. It makes each joint airtight so the pipe pulls properly. A worn or missing grommet is the most common cause of a loose, leaky draw.

Will these accessories fit my pipe?

Questions about Accessories

What accessories do I actually need to start?
Five essentials: charcoal (coconut is the standard), foil or a heat management device (not both), a decent set of tongs, a hose, and mouthtips if you're sharing. Everything else — cleaning brushes, wind covers, mats, bags — is quality-of-life, not essential. A starter kit usually bundles most of the essentials together.
Do I need foil if I have an HMD?
No. An HMD replaces foil completely — the coals sit inside the device, no foil underneath. Use one or the other, never both. Each has its place: HMDs pack easier and produce stronger, cloudier sessions; foil takes more setup but gives you a longer, gentler session.
Will accessories from one brand work with my hookah from another?
Most will. Tongs, foil, charcoal, mouthtips, brushes and mats are universal — they don't care what pipe you own. HMDs and hose adapters are the main exceptions: they're sized to specific bowl or stem dimensions, so check the fit before buying. If you're unsure, product pages list compatible sizes.
How much charcoal do I actually use per session?
Three coconut cube coals are standard for most bowls — enough to start the session, with one extra in reserve if you want to extend. Quick-light coals burn faster and you may need four. A kilo of coconut cubes (around 72 pieces) covers roughly 18–20 sessions, depending on how long you go.
Coconut charcoal or quick-light?
Coconut cube charcoal for home sessions — it burns cleaner, longer, and doesn't add off-flavours to your shisha. Quick-light for outdoor or travel use only, where you don't have a coil burner handy. Never use quick-light indoors without serious ventilation; the sulphur starter makes the first few puffs harsh and unpleasant.
Which accessory upgrade makes the biggest difference?
Depends what bothers you. If fiddling with foil is the friction, an HMD is the upgrade — easier packing, stronger clouds, no foil step, though sessions run shorter because HMDs burn hotter overall. If sessions feel harsh, switch from quick-light to coconut cube charcoal — the single biggest quality improvement most people notice. If flavours ghost between sessions, swap to a silicone hose.
