What are Turkish Shishas?

Turkish shishas are hand-finished pipes made in Turkey with a lineage that goes back to the Ottoman era. Historically brass-and-copper, most current models are built in stainless steel or aluminium with select brass fittings — lighter, easier to maintain, and less prone to tarnish. The base is almost always glass.

What makes the modern Turkish pipes practical is the click-lock system. Instead of threading the stem into the base, you push and twist to lock it — faster to set up, faster to break down for cleaning. The draw is smooth and medium-to-tight, not as restrictive as a proper Egyptian pipe, not as open as a modern German one.

Turkish shishas usually come as a complete set: stem, downstem, glass base, coal plate, clay bowl, gasket, and a matching hose. Height is around 55–65cm without the bowl — proper session-at-home size.

How is a Turkish shisha different from an Egyptian Khalil Mamoon?
Both are traditional-style pipes, but the build is different. Khalil Mamoons are hand-brazed in Egypt from brass and steel with a threaded stem — heavier, solid, tight draw. Turkish shishas are built in stainless steel, aluminium, or traditional brass-and-copper, with a click-lock stem that twists into place in seconds. Draw is a touch lighter than KM — closer to medium than tight.
How do I set up a Turkish click shisha?
Add water to the base until it covers about an inch of the downstem. Twist the stem into the base until it clicks locked. Push the hose into its port, set the coal plate on the stem, then seat the clay bowl on top with the gasket. Pack the bowl, foil or HMD it, and you're ready for coals.
Can I use modern bowls and HMDs on a Turkish shisha?
Yes. The bowl port on a Turkish shisha takes standard bowl grommets, so most phunnel, vortex, and traditional bowls will seat properly. Heat management devices like a Kaloud Lotus also fit — as long as the bowl you're using takes a Lotus, you're good.
What are Turkish shishas made from?
Most current Turkish pipes are built in stainless steel or aluminium — lighter, rust-free, and easier to clean than older traditional metals. Brass-and-copper models like the Tradi Aslan are still made for enthusiasts who want the classic look and weight. The base is almost always glass regardless of stem material.
